TikTok Video Size [2026]: Organic vs Ads, 10-Min Cap

TikTok Video Size [2026]: Organic vs Ads, 10-Min Cap

The short answer on TikTok video size is that it depends on which route your file takes. A video you post organically and later promote as a Spark Ad faces, in TikTok’s wording on its Spark Ads page, “no restrictions on video ratio, video resolution, file type, video duration, bitrate, and file size” for organic videos from any TikTok account. The catch sits elsewhere in the same documentation: videos eligible to be sparked top out at 10 minutes. Uploaded ad creative follows a much tighter rule set, and TikTok Shop product videos follow a third.

This comparison covers four routes: the organic post, the standard In-Feed ad you upload as new creative, the Spark Ad that reuses a published post, and the TikTok Shop video. Every figure comes from a facts check run on November 7, 2026, against TikTok’s own advertising and seller documentation as summarized in that research. Where a number rested on a single research pass, the text says “reportedly” and the tables leave it out. If you only want the cross-platform view, our Reels, TikTok and Shorts size comparison sets the three vertical platforms side by side. This guide goes deeper on TikTok alone.

Three numbers carry most of the decision. Vertical 9:16 is the shape TikTok lists as recommended. Uploaded ad creative runs 5 to 60 seconds, with 9 to 15 seconds recommended. Sparkable organic videos can run up to 10 minutes. That gap, 60 seconds against 10 minutes, is a tenfold difference in how long your video can be, and it explains why so many guides contradict each other.

TikTok Video Size at a Glance: Four Routes, Four Rule Sets

Start with the route, not the pixel count. TikTok does not publish one universal video spec. It publishes separate documents for organic posts used in Spark Ads, for reservation and auction In-Feed ads, and for TikTok Shop, and each document answers to a different workflow. The facts check flagged this directly: a fixed creative limit should not be claimed without naming the ad format and workflow it belongs to.

RouteWho sets the fileWhat the checked sources confirm
Organic postYou, inside the TikTok appMust publish successfully before it can be used as a Spark Ad. No single organic maximum was confirmed
Non-Spark In-Feed adAdvertiser uploads new creativeReservation spec lists 5 to 60 seconds, 9 to 15 seconds recommended (page updated October 31, 2026)
Spark Ads PullAn existing organic post, yours or an authorized creator’sNo restrictions on ratio, resolution, file type, duration, bitrate or file size, but a 10-minute maximum
Spark Ads PushNew creative pushed through an associated TikTok accountGrouped with non-Spark uploads in the reservation duration spec (5 to 60 seconds)
Video Shopping AdExisting post or uploaded video in Ads ManagerNeeds the Sales objective with TikTok Shop as the product source
Shop product videoSeller, per TikTok Shop AcademyAspect ratio between 9:16 and 16:9, 100 MB maximum, MP4, MOV, MKV and AVI

Two older claims no longer hold up. The first says a Spark Ad always requires a freshly uploaded advertiser file. The second says every In-Feed ad is capped at 60 seconds. The current Spark documentation supports neither. A Spark Ad borrows an organic post, and the 60-second cap applies to uploaded creative in the reservation spec, not to every format.

Timing matters too. The reservation In-Feed page was updated on October 31, 2026. According to the same research, TikTok’s Spark Ads documentation reportedly changed on October 21, the Video Shopping Ads creation page on November 6, and the Spark creation guide on November 7. A TikTok video size guide published before those weeks may quote numbers that have since moved, so check any figure against the live page before a large upload.

Nearly every route favors vertical video. The reservation page recommends vertical 9:16 and the Spark route imposes no ratio rule at all, so a 9:16 master is the safest starting file. You can always crop it down for other shapes, while stretching a horizontal clip into a vertical frame costs you picture. The rest of this guide takes each route in turn and ends with a verdict.

TikTok Video Specs Table: Organic, In-Feed, Spark and Shop Side by Side

The table below holds only values that TikTok states in its own documentation and that the facts check confirmed in more than one pass, plus the TikTok quotes reproduced later in this article. Cells that read “not stated” mean the checked sources did not give a figure. They do not mean TikTok has no rule. The prose sections that follow add the single-pass numbers with a hedge.

Read the Pull column as a promise with a footnote. TikTok states that organic videos carry no ratio, resolution, file type, duration, bitrate or file size restrictions, and in the same documentation it states that videos longer than 10 minutes cannot be sparked. The research flagged those two statements as conflicting. Treat 10 minutes as the working ceiling, because an ad that fails authorization costs you more time than a trimmed video does.

The Shop column comes from TikTok Shop Academy and covers product videos, not Video Shopping Ads. TikTok’s advertising documentation, by contrast, treats Shop ads as an Ads Manager workflow. The facts check found no single global Shop video spec, and it warned against stating one without naming the country, the Shop surface and whether the asset is organic, Spark or a non-Spark Video Shopping Ad.

For anyone searching for TikTok video specs in a hurry, the practical reading is this: export vertical 9:16, keep uploaded ad creative under 60 seconds, keep anything you plan to spark under 10 minutes, and keep Shop product videos under 100 MB. Everything else in this guide explains why those four rules exist and where they bend.

Organic TikTok Uploads: What the Sources Confirm

Organic uploads are the least documented route, and that is worth stating plainly. The facts check found no single maximum length that applies to every organic upload, and it could not retrieve TikTok’s full organic-upload specification page. What it did confirm is how organic posts connect to advertising. An organic video must publish successfully on TikTok before it can become a Spark Ad. If the app accepts the post, the Spark Ads route accepts it too, subject to the 10-minute ceiling.

That dependency creates a practical rule: the app is your validator. When a file posts, you know it passed TikTok’s organic checks. When it fails to post, no ad workflow will rescue it. Banned organic posts are also rejected in Ads Manager, and a video must be unauthorized as a Spark Ad before you can delete it from the organic account. Plan your deletions accordingly if you run paid promotion on older posts.

For resolution, TikTok’s small-business guidance reportedly recommends 9:16 creative exported at 1080 × 1920 pixels or higher for clearer playback. That figure rests on one research pass, so treat it as a sensible default rather than a hard rule. A 1080 × 1920 frame is exactly 9:16, so it fills the vertical screen with no crop and no bars.

Because the organic route is the source for Spark Ads, quality decisions made at export carry through to paid delivery. A soft, over-compressed master stays soft when you promote it. If you plan to promote a post, export it the way you would export a finished ad, and keep the project file so you can re-render a shorter version if the 10-minute ceiling bites. Our platform video specs section tracks the same questions for the other major platforms.

One more point for editors who batch-produce content. Because the Spark route accepts the file as published, your organic export settings are also your paid export settings. A team that renders one 9:16 master per video, uploads it once, and promotes the winners avoids the double workflow of building separate ad files. The cost of that shortcut is control. You cannot tailor the file to the stricter uploaded-creative spec, so it only works when your organic videos already sit inside the limits discussed in the next section.

Non-Spark In-Feed Ads: The Uploaded-Creative Spec

A non-Spark In-Feed ad uses a file you upload as advertising creative, with no organic post behind it. This is the route with the most published numbers and the most contradictions. The one verified line is the reservation spec: 5 to 60 seconds, with 9 to 15 seconds recommended, on a TikTok page the facts check dated October 31, 2026.

The remaining figures come from a single research pass over TikTok’s documentation, so read them as reported values. According to that pass, TikTok’s reservation In-Feed specification lists vertical 9:16 at a minimum of 540 × 960 pixels, horizontal 16:9 at a minimum of 960 × 540 pixels, and square 1:1 at a minimum of 640 × 640 pixels. It reportedly lists MP4, MOV, MPEG and 3GP, a maximum file size of 500 MB, and a minimum bitrate of 2,500 kbps.

Auction versus reservation: why two sets of numbers exist

TikTok runs two buying models, and each has its own spec page. The auction In-Feed page reportedly allows non-Spark ads up to 10 minutes, a 500 MB file, a bitrate floor of 516 kbps, and the formats MP4, MOV, MPEG, 3GP and AVI. The reservation page reportedly caps the same creative at 60 seconds with a 2,500 kbps floor. That is why one guide says 10 minutes and another says 60 seconds. Both can be right for different buying models.

The safe move is to build to the stricter page. A file that stays within 60 seconds and clears the 2,500 kbps floor also satisfies the looser auction numbers. The auction page also reportedly states that captions render in white in a uniform font you cannot customize, so burn in styled captions during editing if brand typography matters to you.

Opening and ending scenes

TikTok’s video-package documentation reportedly supports opening and ending scenes of 1 to 10 seconds in MP4, MOV, FLV, MKV or WebM. If you build short branded openers, that range is the one to design for. A 1-second sting and a 10-second animated reveal both qualify, and you can browse intro themes with listed resolution, length and frame rate to see how typical opener lengths compare to that window. Keep the logo hit inside the first second or two, since the recommended full-ad duration is only 9 to 15 seconds.

Do the bitrate math before you export. At the reported 2,500 kbps floor, a 60-second ad comes to about 18.75 MB. That is far below the 500 MB ceiling, so file size is almost never the constraint for short ads. The bitrate floor is the number to watch. Heavily compressed exports that save space can fall under it, and a low-bitrate 9:16 file also looks worse on a phone than the same clip at a healthy rate.

Spark Ads Specs: Pull, Push and the 10-Minute Rule

Spark Ads are TikTok’s native format for promoting organic posts, and TikTok presents them as an ad format rather than a priced plan. They split into two workflows that behave very differently on specs, so keep the two apart when you plan a file.

Spark Ads Pull: borrow a published post

Pull uses a post that already lives on TikTok. You authorize it from a linked or Business Center account, or you use a creator’s authorization code, and Ads Manager pulls the video into the ad. Because the post is already published, the ad inherits its ratio, resolution, file type, bitrate and file size, with the 10-minute ceiling on length. Pulled Spark Ads display up to four caption lines including emojis, and the caption comes from the organic post.

According to the research, each Ads Manager account reportedly supports a maximum of 10,000 Spark Ads, and batch authorization reportedly handles up to 20 video codes at a time. Brand-partner tagging can reportedly provide default authorization for 60 days. Those operational limits matter more to agencies than to solo creators, but they shape how many posts you can keep active at once.

Spark Ads Push: publish new creative through an account

Push works the other way round. You upload or create a video inside Ads Manager, and TikTok publishes it through an associated account after ad review. Because that file arrives as new creative, the reservation specification groups it with non-Spark uploads: 5 to 60 seconds, recommended 9 to 15 seconds. If you want the long-video freedom of Pull, publish organically first and pull the post instead.

TikTok’s documentation also describes a mode for Spark Ads called “Show through ads only,” available only for Spark Ads, including pull-method and video-code ads. It lets a pushed video run as an ad without appearing as a normal public post. The research also records 2026 improvements to Spark setup: direct text edits and a more customizable post-authorization duration.

The Spark route has been moving. Reportedly, TikTok updated its Spark Ads documentation on October 21, 2026, and a TikTok announcement dated September 30, 2026 described a creator-content integration that turns affiliate creator videos into Spark Ads through the TikTok One Content Suite API. None of those updates changed the spec numbers above. They changed how fast brands can authorize and run creator posts, which makes the 10-minute length rule more relevant, not less. If creators send you long cuts for authorization, trim them before you ask for the code.

TikTok Shop Video Specs and Video Shopping Ads

TikTok Shop adds two separate spec sets. The first is the product video a seller attaches to a listing. The second is the Video Shopping Ad that runs in the feed. They are easy to confuse, and the facts check warned that there is no single global Shop video spec.

For product videos, TikTok Shop Academy states: “The video aspect ratio should be between 9:16 and 16:9, the maximum file size is 100 MB, and supported formats include MP4, MOV, MKV, and AVI.” The wording comes from TikTok’s own seller education page (TikTok Shop Academy, US seller site). Note the generous ratio range. A horizontal 16:9 demo clip is allowed here, unlike the vertical-first ad specs.

Video Shopping Ads are different. They make in-feed TikTok videos shoppable, and they send viewers to a TikTok Shop homepage or product feed rather than showing the yellow shopping-bag icon. They require the Sales objective with TikTok Shop as the product source. Reportedly, an ad can include up to 20 active products and an ad group up to 50 videos, and TikTok’s advertising policy reportedly requires e-commerce ad videos to run 5 to 60 seconds in vertical 9:16, square 1:1 or horizontal 16:9.

Spark Ads fit inside this workflow. TikTok’s documentation supports using Spark posts as creative in Video Shopping Ads, and it reportedly recommends prioritizing existing organic videos that already generated conversions. For brand-new assets, the guidance reportedly says to post the video organically with the TikTok Shop Product Link first, then use it through Spark. That advice again points toward the organic-first route, with its looser file rules.

One structural fact affects budgeting. According to TikTok’s guidance as summarized in the research, GMV Max became the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads starting in July 2025. The newest Shop-adjacent product in the research is GMV Max Pro, which TikTok’s Q4 2026 preview reportedly calls the next evolution of GMV Max. Neither changes video specs, but both change how your Shop videos get delivered, so check which campaign type your account runs before you plan creative volume.

Shop video requirements may also differ by country, account and surface, so treat the Academy figures as the US seller reference. Before a big upload batch, confirm the current page for your market. The 100 MB cap is the number most sellers hit first, and the file-size section below shows how fast a high-bitrate clip reaches it.

TikTok’s Own Wording: Three Quotes From the Reservation Page

Third-party guides blur these specs, so it helps to read TikTok’s exact lines. The three quotes below come from the official TikTok reservation In-Feed Ads documentation, a page the facts check dated to an October 31, 2026 update. TikTok is the speaker in each case, and each quote is reproduced as it appears in the verified quote file.

“There are no specific restrictions, as long as everything is already successfully uploaded on the TikTok app.”

TikTok, official TikTok Ads documentation, on Spark Ads Pull specifications for organic videos

This is the Pull rule in one sentence. The condition matters as much as the permission. “Successfully uploaded” means the post has to clear the app’s own checks first, which is why the organic route works as your validator.

“Vertical (recommended): 9:16, ≥540*960px”

TikTok, official TikTok Ads documentation, on recommended dimensions for non-Spark Ads and Spark Ads Push

Two details deserve attention. The word “recommended” signals a target, not a hard rejection threshold. And the figure is a floor, so 1080 × 1920 comfortably exceeds it. The 540 × 960 minimum is exactly half of 1080 × 1920 in each direction, which means a downscaled preview of a full-size master still meets the floor.

“Video Duration: 5-60s, recommend 9-15s.”

TikTok, official TikTok Ads documentation, on the duration specification for non-Spark Ads and Spark Ads Push

The spec is a range, and TikTok adds a recommendation inside it. A 12-second ad sits in the sweet spot, a 55-second ad passes but ignores the guidance, and a 70-second ad fails the reservation spec. Spark Ads Pull sidesteps this duration range because the source is an organic post. Push does not.

Put together, the three lines describe the whole spec philosophy. TikTok loosens the rules when the post already lives in the app and tightens them when you upload fresh creative into an ad slot. A creator who wants maximum freedom should publish first. An advertiser who needs a clean, controlled asset should build to the 60-second range and the vertical minimum.

File-Size Math and Benchmarks: What the Numbers Allow

Most size problems come from bitrate, not length. The table below turns the one hard file-size cap we can cite in a table, the 100 MB Shop product-video limit from TikTok Shop Academy, into the average bitrate each duration allows. It uses decimal megabytes (100 MB equals 800 megabits) and ignores the small audio and container overhead.

Video lengthMaximum average bitrate under 100 MBPractical meaning
15 secondsAbout 53.3 MbpsThe cap is irrelevant for short clips
30 secondsAbout 26.7 MbpsVery high quality fits easily
60 secondsAbout 13.3 MbpsComfortable for 1080 × 1920 H.264
3 minutesAbout 4.4 MbpsStarts to constrain high-motion footage
10 minutesAbout 1.3 MbpsHeavy compression, visible softness

For the uploaded-ad numbers, the same math runs in hedged form. At the reportedly required 2,500 kbps floor, 60 seconds comes to 18.75 MB. At the auction floor of 516 kbps, even a full 10 minutes stays far below the reported 500 MB ceiling. In every case the bitrate floor, not the size ceiling, is the limit that catches careless exports.

What the benchmark record shows

Two sources inform the benchmarks here, and neither is an independent test. First, TikTok’s reservation page recommends 9 to 15 seconds for uploaded creative, which works as a design benchmark. Second, any TikTok-reported comparison of Spark Ads performance against standard In-Feed ads comes from the company itself, so treat it as a claim rather than an independent benchmark.

Treat that third figure carefully. It is TikTok-reported, it compares ad formats rather than file settings, and it rests on a single research pass. It does not show that a larger file performs better. If anything, it shows that content that already earned organic engagement tends to carry that engagement into paid delivery, which fits the organic-first workflow. The checked sources contained no independent playback-quality test across the four routes, so this article publishes no quality scores. A number we cannot trace is worse than no number.

One recent platform change is worth a line for editors. TikTok’s advertising blog reportedly announced on November 6, 2026 that its Symphony creative tool had been upgraded with Dreamina Seedance 2.5. If you generate clips with an AI video model inside that tool, the same export rules apply when you move the result into an ad slot. The model changes how the video is made, not how big the file may be.

Pricing: What Each TikTok Video Route Costs

Video size and price meet in one place: the format you choose decides how you pay. The facts check found no published price for organic uploads, Spark Ads, In-Feed ads, TikTok Shop videos, GMV Max Pro or Smart+ Creative Selection. It also warned against quoting a fixed Ads Manager price without naming the ad format and workflow.

RoutePublished price in the checked sourcesWhat this means for you
Organic postNone listedYou pay in production time, not platform fees
Spark Ads (Pull and Push)Not a publicly priced planCost comes from your campaign settings
Non-Spark In-Feed adNo fixed price to quoteDepends on buying model and bidding
Video Shopping AdNo fixed price to quoteRuns through Ads Manager with the Sales objective
Shop product videoNone listedAttached to a listing under seller documentation
GMV Max Pro and Smart+ updatesNo official price in the checked sourcesCheck Ads Manager before planning budgets

Budget guidance exists, but it comes from a single research pass. Reportedly, TikTok’s budget FAQ lists a minimum budget of US$50 at campaign level and US$20 at ad-group level, and its Ads Manager guidance recommends a daily ad-group budget of US$30 in North America and Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and US$20 in Asia-Pacific. Ads Manager reportedly offers daily and lifetime budgets, with Lowest Cost and Cost Cap as bidding strategies.

For a video maker, the cost lever you control is the creative itself. A file that passes review the first time avoids a rejected ad and a delayed campaign. A 12-second vertical ad built to the 5 to 60 second range costs nothing extra to submit, whereas a rejected 90-second upload costs you a re-edit and a re-review. Spark Ads Pull adds another saving, since you reuse a post you already paid to produce instead of cutting a second asset.

TikTok also upgraded Smart+ for small and midsize advertisers, as the research records. Advertisers can now pick full automation, partial automation or manual control over audience, budget, placements and catalog. That change affects delivery, not file specs, so it will not rescue an out-of-spec video. It may, however, reduce how much time you spend on targeting and leave more of your week for editing.

Seven Worked Scenarios: Which Spec Applies to Which File

The scenarios below are built from the specs above. They are not customer case studies, and they name no brands. Each shows how a common file meets the rules, with the verified or quoted limits first and hedged limits flagged.

  1. A 45-second tutorial, 9:16, posted organically. The post publishes, so it is eligible for Spark Ads Pull. It sits far below the 10-minute ceiling and carries no ratio or resolution restriction. Result: passes as a Spark Ad. The same file uploaded as a non-Spark reservation ad would also fit the 5 to 60 second range but would sit outside the 9 to 15 second recommendation.
  2. A 20-second product ad uploaded as non-Spark creative. The duration is inside 5 to 60 seconds and outside the 9 to 15 second recommendation. If the clip is vertical and at least 540*960 px, it meets the dimension guidance. Trim it to 15 seconds if the story allows.
  3. A 4-minute explainer. As a published post, it can be sparked through Pull because it is under 10 minutes. As new uploaded creative on the reservation route, it fails the 60-second range. The difference is the route, not the video.
  4. A 12-minute webinar clip. It cannot be sparked because it exceeds the 10-minute ceiling. Cut a shorter version of under 10 minutes, publish it, and then authorize that version.
  5. A 90-second 16:9 product demo at 10 Mbps for TikTok Shop. The ratio fits the 9:16 to 16:9 range, but 10 Mbps over 90 seconds is 900 megabits, or 112.5 MB, which breaks the 100 MB cap. Lower the bitrate to about 8 Mbps and the file lands near 90 MB.
  6. A square 1:1 clip from another platform. The Spark Pull route has no ratio restriction once the post publishes. For uploaded creative, the square size is reportedly accepted at a minimum of 640 × 640 pixels. A square clip uses less of the vertical screen, though, so a 9:16 re-edit usually looks better.
  7. A banned or removed organic post. Banned posts are rejected in Ads Manager. A post you want to delete must first be unauthorized as a Spark Ad. Plan archive clean-ups before your campaign ends, not after.

Notice the pattern across these scenarios. Duration decides most outcomes, resolution decides few, and file size decides almost none until you reach Shop product videos. If you remember one habit, make it this one: check the length against the route before you check anything else.

Use-Case Recommendations by Creator Type

Match the route to the job, then build the file to that route’s limits. These recommendations draw on the specs and sources covered above.

  • Solo creator promoting a strong post: publish first, then use Spark Ads Pull. You keep the file as posted, avoid a second render, and stay clear of the 60-second uploaded-creative range. Keep the post under 10 minutes.
  • Small business with one product video: make a 9:16 master and publish it organically. TikTok’s small-business guidance reportedly recommends exporting at 1080 × 1920 or higher. Promote the post with Spark Ads Pull once it earns engagement.
  • Agency running paid creative at volume: build non-Spark assets to the reservation spec (5 to 60 seconds, 9 to 15 recommended, vertical at least 540*960 px). Use creator authorization codes for Pull ads, and keep the reported 10,000 Spark Ads per account ceiling in mind.
  • TikTok Shop seller: keep listing videos under 100 MB in MP4, MOV, MKV or AVI. For shoppable ads, post the video organically with the Product Link, then use it through Spark inside Video Shopping Ads.
  • Streamer or podcaster cutting clips: cut vertical highlights under 60 seconds for uploaded ads and under 10 minutes for organic-then-Spark. A short logo sting at the front works if it stays within the first second or two. Our animated logo intro theme shows how a short brand reveal reads in under a few seconds.
  • Editor repurposing YouTube footage: re-frame to 9:16 by cropping, not stretching. A 16:9 source cropped to the center loses roughly two thirds of its width, so plan your framing for the crop before you shoot.

The last bullet rests on arithmetic. A 9:16 window cut from a 16:9 frame keeps (9/16) divided by (16/9) of the width, which equals 81/256, or about 32%. So you retain about a third of the original horizontal width, and you discard about two thirds of it. That is why shooting vertical from the start beats cropping every time.

Migration Guide: Moving a YouTube or Reels Master to TikTok Ads

Use this sequence when you have an existing edit and want it live on TikTok, either organically or as an ad. It assumes a 16:9 or 9:16 master and an editor that exports H.264 MP4.

  1. Decide the route first. Organic then Spark Pull, uploaded non-Spark, Spark Push, or Shop. The route sets your maximum length.
  2. Check the length. Over 60 seconds rules out uploaded creative on the reservation route. Over 10 minutes rules out Spark entirely.
  3. Re-frame to 9:16. Crop a 16:9 source to the center and re-position key action. Keep titles away from the screen edges, since TikTok overlays buttons and captions on the frame.
  4. Set the frame size. Export at or above the 540*960 px vertical floor. A 1080 × 1920 master is the reported small-business recommendation.
  5. Export MP4 or MOV. Both formats appear in the uploaded-creative and Shop specs. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the common safe choice.
  6. Check bitrate and size. Stay above the reported 2,500 kbps floor for reservation ads and under 100 MB for Shop product videos.
  7. Upload and review. Post organically for the Spark route or upload through Ads Manager for the other routes. Confirm the preview before you submit.

If you have command-line tools, one ffmpeg command handles the crop and the scale in a single pass. It takes a 16:9 master, cuts a centered 9:16 window, scales it to 1080 × 1920, and writes H.264 and AAC into an MP4.

ffmpeg -i master.mov -vf "crop=ih*9/16:ih,scale=1080:1920" -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -movflags +faststart tiktok-9x16.mp4

Add a bitrate flag such as -b:v if you need to hit a floor or a size cap, and always check the output length against your route afterward. The table below summarizes the render settings that the checked sources support.

Pros and Cons of Each TikTok Video Route

RouteProsCons
Organic postFewest rules in practice, doubles as the Spark source, and works as a validatorNo single organic maximum documented in the checked sources
Spark Ads PullNo ratio, resolution, bitrate or size restrictions, long videos allowed, engagement carries over10-minute ceiling, needs a published post, banned posts rejected
Spark Ads PushPublishes new creative through an account without a manual postFollows the stricter uploaded-creative range
Non-Spark In-Feed adFull creative control, no organic post neededTightest spec, two sets of published numbers, fixed caption style
Video Shopping AdShoppable, can reuse Spark postsNeeds Sales objective and Shop source, market availability varies
Shop product videoGenerous ratio range from 9:16 to 16:9100 MB cap, specs vary by country and surface

The pattern is consistent. Routes that reuse a published post trade control for freedom. Routes that take new uploads trade freedom for control. If you cannot decide, ask what you need to change after publishing. If the answer is “nothing,” Pull is cheaper and looser. If the answer is “caption style, thumbnail, call to action,” uploaded creative gives you the controls.

Verdict: Publish Vertical First, Spark Second

For most video makers, the best TikTok video size is a 9:16 master published organically, then promoted through Spark Ads Pull when it proves itself. The data backs that choice. Pull has no ratio, resolution, bitrate or file size restriction, and its 10-minute ceiling is ten times the 60-second range on uploaded creative. A single file serves both organic and paid delivery, and you avoid maintaining two edits.

Use uploaded non-Spark creative when you need control that a published post cannot give you, such as styled captions or a purpose-built ad cut. Build to the stricter page: vertical 9:16 at or above 540*960 px, 5 to 60 seconds, with 9 to 15 seconds as the target, and a bitrate above the reported 2,500 kbps floor. Sellers should keep product videos under 100 MB and treat Video Shopping Ads as a separate, Ads Manager workflow that benefits from organic-first posting.

Two caveats apply. First, the checked sources did not confirm a single organic upload maximum, so confirm it in the app. Second, many of the finer ad numbers rest on one research pass and TikTok updates its spec pages often. The reservation page changed on October 31, 2026, and other pages reportedly changed between October 21 and November 7. Re-check before any big upload. The takeaway: pick the route, then pick the numbers, and never the other way round.

Vertical 9:16 is the shape TikTok lists as recommended. For uploaded ads, TikTok’s reservation documentation recommends vertical 9:16 at 540*960 px or larger. Export at or above that floor and keep the original proportions.

How long can a video be to use as a Spark Ad?

TikTok’s Spark Ads documentation states a 10-minute maximum for videos that can be sparked. The same documentation says organic videos have no restrictions on duration, so treat 10 minutes as the working limit.

Do Spark Ads need a specific resolution or file type?

No. For organic videos from any TikTok account, TikTok states there are no restrictions on ratio, resolution, file type, duration, bitrate or file size. The post only has to publish successfully on TikTok first, and the 10-minute length ceiling still applies.

How long can a standard In-Feed ad be?

The reservation specification lists 5 to 60 seconds for non-Spark ads and Spark Ads Push, with 9 to 15 seconds recommended. Other TikTok pages describe different limits for other buying models, so confirm which page applies to your campaign.

Can I upload a horizontal 16:9 video to TikTok Shop?

TikTok Shop Academy says product-video aspect ratio should fall between 9:16 and 16:9, so 16:9 is allowed for product videos. The maximum file size is 100 MB, and supported formats include MP4, MOV, MKV and AVI.

Why do guides give different TikTok video specs?

TikTok publishes separate specs for organic posts, auction ads, reservation ads, Spark Ads and Shop videos, and updates them at different times. A guide that quotes one page and ignores the rest will contradict a guide that quotes another. Name the route before you trust any number.

How much do TikTok video ads cost?

The checked sources show no fixed price. Spark Ads are an advertising format, not a publicly priced plan, and cost depends on the ad format and workflow. Set budgets inside TikTok Ads Manager.
